Frequently Asked Questions

Many of our customers call us with questions about shipping their freight.  Listed below are some of the more frequently asked questions we receive. If you have other questions please contact us at CustomerService@ShipSST.com or (801) 462-2535.

Q: How much does it cost to ship freight with SST?
A: Our rates specialists will be glad to assist you in finding the best rates for your shipment. They can be reached by calling (801) 462-2535 for a quote or reach us at CustomerService@ShipSST.com or (801) 462-2535.

Q: How are freight rates determined?
A: The rate that a carrier charges is dependent on a number of factors, ranging from the distance from pickup to delivery, the weight of the shipment, the "class" of the shipment and more.  Ray Bohman of Logistics Management explains these factors in an article published in this article published October 01, 2008.  Click here for a copy of his article.

Q: What is Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) Shipping?
A: LTL trucking companies usually handle freight shipments ranging from 100 to 20,000 pounds. Shipping with a LTL carrier is the most convenient and most economical method of moving bulky items that are too large for the USPS or parcel delivery companies.

Q: What is a Bill of Lading (BOL)?
A: A BOL is a standard document that provides the LTL carrier the mandatory documentation pertaining to the items being shipped. A fully completed BOL must be provided to SST's driver at the time the freight is picked up.

Q: Is there a fee for residential pickup or delivery?
A: Generally, yes there are additional deliver fees required for deliveries at non-commercial locations.  These fees offset the additional expense and labor required for items such as lift gates, limited access facilities, construction sites and other special handling.

Q: How should my freight be packaged and prepared for shipping?
A: Typically freight that is being shipped with SST must be handled several times during transit. It must be packaged to protect it from scuffing, vibration, crushing, dropping, humidity, condensation. It is a good practice to load freight onto pallets or package freight into crates. Sturdy shipping containers such as corrugated fiberboard boxes are normally acceptable as well.

Proper packaging serves several purposes:

  • It protects the freight from handling and transit damage.
  • It protects other freight from being damaged by your freight.
  • It helps to avoid loss situations; situations in which some of your freight is separated from the rest and lost in transit.

Q: What States does SST Service?
A:  SST delivers directly to all locations with in the State of Utah. In addition to our direct service area we also "interline" freight to nationwide carriers.  SST is able to handle all of your freight needs, local, intra-state or nationwide.
